Clamshell & convertible PCs hardened for students

Intel has released its next generation of Learning Series platform for the educational market. The Learning Series is a collection of hardware, software, content, infrastructure, and training programs for which Intel provides the Product Reference Designs and development requirements to local vendors to use to produce PCs and related collateral. Lenovo, one of Intel's partners in the program, has said at the same time that it will soon begin shipping its latest iterations of these devices, the Classmate+ Clamshell and Classmate+ Convertible laptops.

Both devices are equipped with the just-launched Intel Atom N2600 dual-core processor. Storage capacity is up to 320GB, with a SATA hard drive or up to 32GB with an SSD. The laptops sport three USB ports, VGA out, and an optional HDMI port. They also come with a web camera with up to 2 megapixel resolution.

Built upon a ruggedized design, the laptops incorporate a water-resistant keyboard, strengthened corners, reinforced steel hinges, and a hardened DC power jack. Both come with a 10.1-inch anti-glare display, with options for high brightness or HD resolution. A six-cell battery provides up to 10 hours of running time.

The display on the convertible model is a capacitive touchscreen to be used in conjunction with a pen. The design of the convertible model integrates a rotating hinge to allow the screen to be viewed from multiple angles.

Intel launched the Learning Series program in 2007. Since then, more than six million Intel classmate PCs have been shipped in over 70 countries. Lenovo began shipping a Classmate+ netbook in March.

The Lenovo Classmate+ Clamshell laptop and Convertible laptop will be available later this month to education and government customers. The price of the laptops will vary in each market based on configuration options and local costs, such as taxes.
