Camera may begin shipping after 2+ year beta

RED, the maker of high-end professional hybrid digital still and motion cameras has submitted its latest product, the Epic-X to the FCC for approval. The photos of the submission, have been posted by Wireless Goodness. The 57 images detail the sophisticated modular components of an imaging system used to produce such motion pictures as The Hobbit, The Muppet Movie, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

RED has been building cinematography cameras since 1999. It launched a new generation of digital cameras with modular components in 2008 that allow the company, and owners of its cameras to incrementally upgrade the system. RED detailed a beta version of the Epic-X back in 2009 and has been perfecting it since then.

The design of the system lets videographers choose as much or as little equipment as is needed to record, including different grips, previewing systems, storage and lens mounts. The core of the Epic-X, the "brain" costs $34,500. To that must be added a display ($1,600), a SSD holder ($1,500), SSD storage ($950 to $3,200), and lens mount ($2,000). Lenses themselves range from $4,250 to $6,000). RED has not announced when a non-beta production model of the camera will be available, but it is taking deposits for $3,450.
