Amazon may start up cloud search service

Launch could come as early as tomorrow

Amazon may soon be launching a cloud search service. PandoDaily reports through sources that the product may already be in the hands of early customers for testing. Amazon has sent out e-mail announcing a big event tomorrow morning, and there is speculation it could be about this new service.

Such a move by Amazon would put the online retailer and services provider in even more direct competition with Google than it already is. Google's site search offering gives company webpages a site crawler and search box, eliminating the client company's need to invest time and money building its own search capabilities. Amazon's cloud search works differently. It allows startups to pass their data through their search tool and structure results.

Since Amazon has already attracted many companies to the cloud with its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) hosting service, customer companies can run any query and get immediate results.
