Nike+ FuelBand tracks steps, calories, NikeFuel metrics

Nike+ FuelBand now up for pre-order at $149

Nike+ has just introduced its latest product, the FuelBand. It pairs with a dedicated iOS app to measure a wearer's daily activity levels, returning metrics such as time, calories burned, steps taken and a newly created NikeFuel. The wristband can display these on its own display composed of 100 white LEDs, but the iOS app makes them easier to understand and allows them to be stored. An airplane mode is present, and the band will store metrics until it can offload them to the website or iOS device. All navigation is done through a single button on the wristband.

Another 20 color LEDs will track a user's daily progress, ranging from red to green. The wristband otherwise contains a three-axis accelerometer and communicates with portable iOS devices using Bluetooth. There is also the option of syncing with the Nike+ website using a micro USB connection.

The NikeFuel measure was created by the company based on work with sports experts and engineers. It uses oxygen kinetics to allow users to compare their NikeFuel usage to athletes and removes gender, body type and the kind of activity from the equation, which calories take into account. Users can set their own daily goals, but Nike provided a general idea: if users burn between 1,200 and 1,400 NikeFuel points per day, they are considered inactive. A score of 2,800 to 3,000 per day classifies users as active ones.

The FuelBand is now available for pre-order, priced at $149. When it ships hasn't been revealed, however.
