HTC joins rush to upgrade Android devices to ICS

The HTC Flyer tablet could be in line for a relatively quick official update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) according to a report from HTC-Hub. The tablet was recently updated to Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) from Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), but the new report suggests that the upgrade to ICS could come as soon as this quarter. It is expected that HTC's custom interface layers will remain intact in the next update, as it did when upgraded to Honeycomb.

Manufacturers have appeared keen to cash in on user excitement with the arrival of Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with a lot of hype surrounding its arrival. A number of Android manufacturers have promised users fast upgrades to the latest OS -- in previous years rollouts were either much slower, taking up to a year or more, or not arriving at all. While tablet users may not experience a significant visual difference in the way the OS functions, it brings a noticeably slicker experience and should bring additional speed efficiencies in browsing and other tasks, even on single-core devices lke the Flyer.

The 7-inch Flyer tablet carries a Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.5GHz and was one of the first of the recent crop of ARM-based tablets to include a digital pen and custom pen-input software.
