APU sales offest by drop in graphics processors
AMD has reported its financial results for the fourth quarter and for 2011. Annual income was $6.57 billion, up two percent, while quarterly income was a flat $1.69 billion as compared to last year. Net income was $358 billion for the year, while for the quarter, the company reported a loss of $177 million.
Revenues for AMD's core processor business grew to $5.0 billion, an increase of eight percent over last year, driven by higher mobile processor and chipset revenues. AMD claimed it sold 30 million APUs (Fusion-based processrs) during 2011, many of which found their way into Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba notebooks.
Results for its Graphics segment was weak, however. Revenues for the year were $1.6 billion, a drop of 10 percent. The year-over-year decrease was attributed to the drop in demand for graphics processors in desktops and add-in boards as integrated video gets fast enough to handle more tasks.
AMD is not optimistic about the first quarter of this year. It currently expects a revenue drop of five to eleven percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2011.
