Samsung Epic 2 slider may return after all
Samsung's seemingly abandoned Epic 2 for Sprint might still see the light of day after leaks saw it resurface. The Android QWERTY slider is now in Cellebrite's device tracking system, ACSyndicate found, usually a sign that it's getting close to release. The SPH prefix in front of its D705 model number suggests that it's intended for a Sprint-related carrier, which given Sprint's own absence could mean Boost Mobile or Virgin Mobile instead.
In its current state, the hardware would be modest for larger carriers but would raise the bar considerably for budget providers. A four-inch, 540x960 display, a 1.2GHz single-core Hummingbird chip, and an eight-megapixel camera would make it slightly more advanced than the HTC Hero S it would likely have to compete against. It would most likely stop at 3G rather than use LTE, although it should have dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi.
Release details of the Epic 2, if it ships at all, aren't clear. At this stage, it would either have a low contract price or would be relatively affordable, possibly serving as a complement or replacement for the Motorola Triumph at Virgin. [via The Verge, bottom image via PocketNow]
