Tilera intros 16-, 36-core PCs on a single card

Chipmaker Tilera has just introduced new 36- and 16-core TILE-Gx 64-bit processors. The company claims performance that betters an Intel Xeon-based system from the 36-core version, but with just 20 percent of the power use and about an eighth of the physical space. The company foresees applications in VoIP systems, streaming video set-ups, and real-time image and video processing, among others.

The outfit said it's working with over 80 customers on products that use its chips, with Harmonic and Mercury Computer Systems among them. The company has working samples embedded in a PC that uses a half-sized PCIe card and a larger computer that contains 144 cores in a 1U box.

The system is compatible with popular server apps without the need to recode, like ARM-based multi-core systems. [via SlashGear]
