Samsung teases Super Bowl ad, reveals it's a rehash

Samsung Galaxy Note ad reuses old segments

Samsung has posted a teaser video (below) for its Galaxy Note Super Bowl ad that has already triggered some concerns about its success. The spot now appears to recycle scenes from the original ad of November, including the complaints about how the iPhone 4S looks too much like the old model and the "sketchy" battery life. Most of this apparent first half of the 90-second ad shows the Apple fans bored with waiting.

Regardless of reception, the ad is a big gamble for Samsung. It's believed to have cost as much as $6 million for its single airing and is advertising a $300 minimum device with a very large 5.3-inch screen. Also, it now faces an ironic reversal of its position from 2010 and earlier, where the Samsung device is now only on AT&T and Apple's is on multiple carriers.

The Galaxy Note's primary advantages over the Galaxy S II Skyrocket on the same network are the display and the pen, whose built-in use is mostly limited to Samsung's own S Memo drawing app.

    Dell Streak 5 version 2.0

Re: "...a $300 minimum device with a very large 5.3-inch screen."

    Remember the Dell Streak 5?
    Discontinued in August 2011.

    Remember the Archos 5?
Might still actually be in production. Who knows / cares?

And now Samsung will try to sell a 5.3" phone / padlet?
    Good luck with that.

This is throwing gas on the fire..

...trying to rally the anti-iPhone sentiment already out there. There's no way ads like this will convert current iPhone lovers by making fun of them. We already know the truth about our iPhones, and find the commercials insulting. To me, this is ad money spent poorly :) but what do I know, they're not trying to sell me a phone apparently.

Screen size does matter, but so does quality. I haven't seen an OLED Samsung that looked right to me so far. I suspect 5.3" might be a little TOO big for my tastes, but that's just me.

In full disclosure, I'm not an 'artist' but I have barista-ed in the past.

When did long lines mean inferiority?

Honestly, what's the rationale here...that there are that many people making ignorant purchases? I'd say that sort of negates trying to tell such people about what makes the Galaxy a "smartphone".

    My question

My question is: does anyone at Samsung actually think that the Note is going to be something that anyone wants? I'm sorry 4 inches looks kinda reasonable. 5 inches is bloody huge for a phone.

Also Samsung used to be my go to brand for non Apple products. If I needed a monitor, external HDD, internal HDD (which was a bad idea since I had to get them replaced four times and eventually just gave up, that was a waste of 100 bucks!) But if Samsung's current approach is indicative of who they are as a company, I don't want anything to do with them. Hence why my recent HDD purchase was a Sharp.

    Huh...?

Is Samsung trying to say that nearly 100% of your experience with your phone happens during the time you're waiting in line to buy it?

What does the time spent waiting to buy the phone have anything to do with how good the phone is?

Everything Samsung makes is a rehash. Why shouldn't their ads be, too?
