Sprint to give likely defectors discounts

Sprint is planning a short but key promo to catch customers that might leave. Details uncovered by SprintFeed show the carrier using e-mail or physical mail to offer a discount to customers "at a high risk of leaving Sprint." If tagged, they will get amounts between $25 to $100 off their next phone if they're upgrade-eligible, with the amount most likely depending on the device.

The discount would require a two-year contract, like other upgrades, but would work with any device and be counted no matter how steep the discount. A 16GB iPhone 4S, for example, could theoretically drop to $100.

Sprint's promo should start February 5 and run until March 18.

Retention deals are nothing new to the cellular industry, where avoiding churn (customer turnover) is one of the most important goals. A voluntary offer before the customer is on the verge of leaving is less common, however, and shows Sprint still concerned that it might lose subscribers, most often to AT&T or Verizon.
