Client offers push-to-talk, Bing integration

Skype has released an update to its desktop software for Windows machines. Version 5.8 adds a number of new features, including 1080p video calling and support for Facebook audio and video calling. Users can also take advantage of group screen share, presenting an entire screen view or a single application window with up to 10 contacts.

The Facebook integration enables Skype users to communicate through the social network's system, even if the contacts to not have a Skype account of their own, though the company cautions that the feature is still in beta development.

A new push-to-talk feature, designed with gamers in mind, can be used to toggle microphone muting on a Skype call using an assignable hotkey.

The 1080p video calling requires Logitech's c920 webcam, while the group sharing feature is only available with Skype Premium. The client is available as a free download directly from the company.

    Skype 3.8 was the best...

every new iteration makes icons & text smaller (non control panel fixable), and opens up HUGE needless windows all over the desktop, with ridiculously LARGE animations and icons.

Bet MS will sure fix that; Oops sorry will have to keep on using 3.8 with readable text, understandable icons, and a simple non cluttered interface.

The future for pro desktop users looks bleak...
