Peek stops supporting lifetime device service

Despite at one time offering a $300 lifetime subscription deal for its Peek Twitter and text messaging handhelds, users reported that their service was cut abruptly on January 30. Some did receive e-mails warning them of the stoppage, and Peek CEO Amol Sarva confirmed service for the devices has ended. The products, such as the Peek 9 that added e-mail to its list of capabilities, used T-Mobile's 2G network for their connection to the web.

The CEO justified the service stoppage by saying the devices are almost obsolete and the cost of maintaining the service for such a small amount of users was too much. At the same time, networks are changing standards and protocols, which has aged the devices further. The $300 lifetime service, which was offered for one day, lasted 28 months, which still represents a discount of $560 compared to the regular $20 per month fee.

Lastly, Sarva was adamant Peek wouldn't make a device to replace its exiting range. [via Engadget]
