Sony trademarks Xperia Solo name in US

Sony has made a filing with the US Patent and Trademark office for Xperia Sola. ‘Sola,’ which can mean ‘alone’ or ‘only,’ could be be a new device, or it could be a revelation as to what the ‘S’ stands for in its recently unveiled Xperia S , Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) smartphone. The filing, which was made on January 30, covers mobile phones as well as accessories.

The Sony Xperia S is one of the first handsets to carry only Sony’s name following its recent acquisition of Ericsson’s stake what had been a 10 year union. It is also one of the first smartphones to support both GPS and Russia’s equivalent, GLONASS. By utilzing its Qualcomm chipset in this way, it is able to deliver much more accurate positioning results in half as much time.

The Xperia S packs a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display capable of showing movies in 720p (1280x720) and includes Sony’s Bravia TV technology. It also incorporates a 12.1-megapixel camera that can shoot in 1080p. The dual-core Snapdragon processor at its heart is clocked at 1.5GHz and is matched with 1GB of RAM. [via Fusible]
