Instagram gets significant visual update

Instagram finished the week with a significant update to its app (App Store). The 2.1 update now has Lux, an image adustment option that automatically brings out details in highlights and shadows in a rough equivalent to high dynamic range (HDR) shooting. Similar to the tilt-shift effect, Lux can stack with other filters.

The interface has been given a new, simpler look that scraps the signature 'bulge' of the capture button and otherwise cleans up. iOS 5 users now get better Notification Center support, where tapping a notification now brings it directly to the comment, photo, or profile mentioned in the notice. One new filter, Sierra, comes with the app.

More interface changes are coming in the near future, Instagram hinted.

Outside of the notification advantages, the app will work on any iOS device running 3.1.2 or later.
