Verizon ships Droid 4 LTE messager

Verizon delivered one of its first smartphones of the new year Friday in the Droid 4. The Motorola headliner we tried at CES is up for $200 on a contract, making it one of the more affordable LTE phones. Buyers can also pick it up for $550 contract-free.

The hardware is one of the few 4G messaging phones on the market and centers on a slide-out keyboard that we thought was good when trying it, although not necessarily as good as that on the Bold 9930. The screen is smaller than on the Droid RAZR at four inches, it's in some ways a step forward by using an LCD instead of original Super AMOLED and keeps the same 540x960 resolution. Both share a 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor, an eight-megapixel rear camera, and a 1.3-megapixel front camera.

Out of the box, the Droid 4 ships with Android 2.3, although it and the Droid RAZR should get Android 4.0 within the next few months.
