iPad 3 may have firmer launch date

Apple's rumored early March iPad 3 launch event may have been narrowed down through a claim Monday. The company was said by previously accurate iMore tipsters to be currently set for March 7. It could still change, the people said, but the date was consistent both with the earlier rumor and with Apple's preferences for mid-week events.

Other parts of the talk mostly backed up earlier descriptions of a 2048x1536 display and the possible inclusion of 4G over LTE. An assertion that the A6 chip would be quad-core wasn't as clear given recent talk of the A6 being a faster dual-core design in some circles. The LTE chip may depend on whether or not Apple can get a Qualcomm chipset that unites both 3G and 4G, promised this year but possibly arriving too late.

No mention was made of the actual release date in stores. Apple usually makes a point of releasing new iOS device under two weeks after they're made public and could make March 16 the target.

Update: A confirmation of sorts from The Loop's Jim Dalrymple supports the timing. He's known to have connections at Apple and has traditionally been accurate.
