VLC 2.0 to get Blu-ray support in OS X, 64-bit in Windows

Mac interface to be overhauled

VideoLAN says it is working on a major v2.0 update of VLC, the group's free, open-source media player software. The project is described as a complete rewrite, one which will add major features to different platforms. The Mac version, for instance, will gain Blu-ray playback, a native fullscreen mode in Lion, and an overhauled interface, closer in appearance to iTunes. Media formats, for instance, are situated in a left-hand column.

Windows users will have access to a 64-bit version. Some planned multi-edition changes include a revised subtitle manager, improved video output modes, and support for multiple videos stored inside RAR files. Lua-based extensions will handle functions like posting to Twitter, fetching movie data from Allociné, and automatically retrieving subtitles.

VLC 2.0 is currently in release candidate form, meaning that the final version could go public within weeks. The software may be most important to Mac users, since it supports popular codecs missing from QuickTime; Apple has for example consciously avoided adding first-party Blu-ray drives or support to Macs.

Blurays still look far more amazing than any strea

AppleTV has probably the second worst video quality for HD movies I've sampled. No, the first place honor goes to Netflix.

Watching a bluray after extended AppleTV viewings is like getting lazik. The best online HD I've seen are the videos in Microsofts' Zune store which are accessed from the XB360. The 1080p video quality they have is amazingly close to bluray quality. I was really blown anyway at how great it looked.

    Highlights of the MS's 1080:
    >No motion blocking or banding-AT ALL
    >1080p
    >No noise or softening

If Apple can get a next generation version going of their AppleTV that can support not only 1080p but a more quality driven bit-rate I'll give it a second look. Only then would I consider bluray dead. As good as the Zune store is, it's catalog is nowhere near big enough to abandon bluray.

    HD

Yea, Apple does a piss-poor job with HD. Sorry, Apple, but unless you really step up your game, Blu-ray squashes anything you have like a bug (it's quite disappointing actually).

Um, nothing is changing at Apple. Did you miss the part about it is VLC?
