SanDisk puts out two very high-end SSDs

SanDisk in a late Tuesday refresh tackled the very high end of solid-state drives still accessible to the public. The Extreme SSD is meant as much for gamers as for pro users and matches the performance of other fast drives with peak read speeds of 550MB per second and peak writes at 520MB per second. Its edge may be through the input-output rate, which tops at 83,000IOPS for writes and 44,000IOPS for reads.

Price could be instrumental as well for the 2.5-inch drive. Capacities start at 120GB for $190, with a 240GB drive costing $400. The 480GB capacity is one of the cheapest of its kind, at $750 versus the usual $1,000. All of them are shipping today.

A companion drive, the X100, is intended for pre-built PCs. It's not as fast, at 500MB per second reads and 420MB per second writes, but can be customizable for everything from ultrabooks to desktops. Designs exist not just for 7mm- and 9mm-tall notebook bays but an Apple-like micro SATA and custom designs for specific uses.

The X100 starts with as little as 32GB of space and doubles in capacity across several increments up to 512GB. SanDisk hasn't named any individual customers, who are the ones that will ultimately set the price.
