Motorola stalls most Android 4 updates

Motorola gave out a detailed timetable of its promised Android 4.0 upgrades that stalled them for most users. In spite of promising most updates early in the year, the original Atrix, the Atrix 2, the Photon 4G, and all international variants on the Xoom 2/Xyboard tablet wouldn't start seeing updates until the summer. The initial batch doesn't start until the spring, when the international RAZR, the international and Family Edition Xoom Wi-Fi models, and the China-only MT917 and XT928 should get their upgrades.

Most of Verizon's lineup, including the Droid RAZR, Droid RAZR MAXX, Droid Bionic, Droid 4, and Droid Xyboard, were still under vague schedules with "further details to follow," suggesting their updates might not come until summer or later. Some editions of the Atrix, Photon 4G, and 3G Xoom, as well as US Cellular's Electrify, fit under this label.

Motorola has blamed Google for having to wait until the Galaxy Nexus was shipped before it could even get started, but it hasn't explained why most of the updates will take several months. Many expect Google to have announced Jelly Bean, the follow-up to Android 4.0, by the time some of Motorola's phones are just getting last year's version.

So far, the only smartphones to officially get Android 4.0 quickly are those with completely stock implementations, including the Galaxy Nexus and the 2010-era Nexus S.
