Apple pulls Viddy app after racy material takes over

Viddy made to rework policies to stay on App Store

Viddy faced an abrupt about-face in policy from Apple after its video sharing app was pulled from the App Store, according to an investigation. The iPhone creator had it removed after "adult material" started becoming common in the service. A look by GigaOM (above) showed that a large number of videos were clearly being used that way.

The developer was working with Apple to try and resolve the problem.

Viddy's case is unusual as it's primarily for user-uploaded material. The startup also had its own mechanisms to let viewers flag clips so that they might be taken down preemptively. With a disproportionate amount of racy content still in place, though, Apple may have seen its existing app rating system as not properly covering what was actually being posted.

The at least temporary ban came as a partial surprise given the number of celebrities using the service. Viddy also has relatively large investments, including a $6 million multi-party backing that includes Qualcomm.

People are sexual. Censorship, in this case however, exists to keep Apple from exposing people to intense negative emotions - regardless of whether those emotions are healthy or reasonable. As the internet becomes increasingly a "captured agency", we will have to rethink how our first amendment rights apply to speech in private forums.

    understandable move

Many celebrities are open about their use and approval of this service. What parent wants their teenager going to look for videos posted by Justin Bieber only to end up getting fed up a video posted instead by "Just In Her Beaver" using misappropriate key wording to get hits.

The parents would freak and would blame Apple because most of them don't have a proper understanding that Apple can't be held responsible for vetting every video by a third party company whether it is Viddy, Vimeo or You Tube.

Apple has a clear policy about 'adult' materials being approved in the store so they give the company a choice, the app is removed or the content is. Viddy is willing to remove the content or strongly try to so once they declare they have a system in place Apple will let the app back in the store.

    Excuse me...

Would someone please inform Apple that they aren't running for the GOP nomination.

    Actually

There is plenty of "adult" material (not p*** but content of an adult nature) in apps on the App Store, but the apps are clearly labelled as such. The problem with Viddy is that it was a video app that was becoming an adult app, and the rating didn't match the content.

If you want p*** on your iPhone, great! Put it on there yourself. But it shouldn't be on the App Store (only because age-verification technology that's iron-clad doesn't yet exist), and it certainly shouldn't be in apps that are not rated for it.

The app is available right now. Maybe they've reinstated it.

    Well, but

I'm sure I've seen some p*** using that app Apple provides. Safari or something? Sure, I should start a class action suit about the effect looking at tiny p*** has had on my eyesight…

    That's good and

Thanks for the good article. I also have a lot of interest in Camera apps, and found a new app which has great filter effects: you can download and check it out from the link. goo.gl/5uKAy
I expect a post about this kind of non-popular apps as well.
