Huawei enters 10-inch tablet market

Huawei primarily focused on its flagship Ascend D quad smartphone during the company's media event at Mobile World Congress, however the company also brought along its new MediaPad 10 FHD tablet. The latter device received only a mere mention during the press conference, but Electronista had a chance to try it out following the main event.

The company did not let anyone hold the tablet, but the models allowed us to flick through the interface and do a bit of exploring. The new MediaPad shares the same Huawei-branded K3 chip as the Ascend D, bringing four cores running at 1.5GHz. We found the hardware to be extremely fast on both devices, easily handling interface transitions and maintaining high frame rates when running games.

The tablet integrates a 10-inch display with 1920x1200 resolution, which is clearly a step in the right direction. We have been impressed with the 720p displays on smartphones such as the Ascend D and Galaxy Nexus, and 1080p capabilities on a tablet makes even more sense for a media device. We found the viewing angles to be extremely wide, suggesting the display may be an IPS panel.

The MediaPad 10 appears to be a strong contender among 10-inch Ice Cream Sandwich tablets, though the price tag will be a deal maker or breaker. When asked if the tablet would fall below the magic $500 price point, a representative said "I think so" but could not confirm details. The real price is expected to be announced before the device arrives sometime in the second quarter of the year.

    one possible problem

many folks will look at this and see it as a copy of the iPad and prefer to go for the real thing.
