Hands on: Fujitsu's Tegra 3 smartphone

updated 09:20 am EST, Mon February 27, 2012

Handset has yet to receive official name

Fujitsu was one of many companies that have adopted NVIDIA's Tegra 3 chipset to power their latest smartphones. The company has yet to give its new offering an official name, calling it an "ultra-high-spec smartphone," however the device appeared to be ready to arrive on the market. Electronista stopped by Fujitsu's booth at Mobile World Congress for a bit of hands-on time.

One thing that caught our attention was the mention of Tegra 3 and LTE support in the same device, which contrasts to the rest of the quad-core phones that have been unveiled in Barcelona. The HTC One X is available in two versions, the standard Tegra 3 model and a second variant that steps down to a dual-core Qualcomm chip but adds LTE functionality.

Fujitsu's new phone offers a 4.6-inch display with 1280x720 resolution, matching the rest of the high-end Ice Cream Sandwich crowd. The device does have a few features that differentiate it, however, including a 13.1-megapixel camera sensor, water resistant housing, and a fingerprint sensor for security.

Fujitsu's hardware buttons below the display feel a bit awkward, in comparison to devices such as the Galaxy Nexus that omit tactile buttons altogether. We also found the back panel to be rather cheap looking, made of black plastic with tiny metallic flakes, though this may change before the device ships.

Fujitsu has yet to announce pricing information or a launch date for the Tegra 3 handset. We expect it to arrive later than its quad-core competition this year, as NVIDIA takes more time to resolve the LTE compatibility issue.
