AMD rumored to make graphics chip
Sony is said to be considering retiring its Cell processor that is utilized in the current PlayStation 3, and moving to a different type of chip for the upcoming PlayStation 4 console. Unnamed sources have told Kotaku the company will not continue to develop the processor architecture for its gaming platform, contradicting early rumors.
The sources did not shed light on what direction Sony may take if it does choose to diverge from the Cell architecture. Speculation points to AMD as a potential suitor for the processor and graphics components, however the rumors have yet to be corroborated.
Separate reports suggest Sony is attempting to bring the PS4 to the market near Microsoft's launch timing for the next Xbox. The company has remained mum on details surrounding the PS4, despite some rumors suggesting the device was intended to start production late last year.
