MyFord Touch 2 reaches existing cars through USB

Ford on Monday said its MyFord Touch 2 car upgrade was heading out to customers this week. About 300,000 cars that qualify for the upgrade would get a free USB flash drive in the mail that would bring them to the new interface. An upgrade is expected to take about an hour; those with full GPS packages will also get an SD card with newer map info.

Any 2013 model year car that doesn't already have the version 2 update should get it as well. The news came in sync with word that the 2013 Flex and Taurus would both ship with the upgrade.

MyFord Touch 2 is primarily an interface update and greatly simplifies the layout following complaints about the initial generation. It does significantly improve playback for those tethered to the system through an iPhone, Android device, or BlackBerry. Sync Destinations can likewise now send information to the phone first to get an offline copy of directions to be synced to the car later.

    Despise Ford Sync

    I owen a 2011 Ford Edge.

I have to get on my hands and knees and pull the fuse under my dash that powers the Sync system in order to get it work properly.

Getting my iPhone to connect to Sync is driving me crazy. It connects. I drive. I get out. I get back in. Doesn't connect. Then when it does connect, I can't get my music to connect in addition to the phone.

    Very frustrating!

    What did you expect?

DeepDish, it was/is designed and developed by Microsoft... What did you expect? iPhone simplicity? They should have partnered with Apple...

    original Sync (2010 Focus SES)

I have had my 2010 Focus since September of last year and there hasn't been a single update to it that entire time.

Let's say I was listening to Pandora on my iPhone 4S (while on WiFi)... I get in my car, the Stereo is tuned to FM... my iPhone starts streaming Pandora.. I am not tuned to Bluetooth Streaming on the stereo...

So, Pandora is streaming away (in the background)... eating up my data plan.

I agree, ruel24. if Ford had paired with Apple, they would have been better off.

    My experience is different

I have experienced much the same problems as young1 and DeepDish but I still love MyFord Touch. Perhaps the updates are different in Canada but MyFord Touch on my Ford Focus Titanium was upgraded twice by Ford. With each upgrade, the performance has improved. For example, where I would get the Microsoft blue screen of death on a daily basis, it no longer occurs. The system often can't find my iPhone (although it allows me to use it still the same) and the navigation system cuts out (the error message states that the SD card is not installed; it needs to be ejected and reinserted in order to work) as does the clock but, functionally, it is better than it was. I see this as a work in progress and am pleased that the upgrade to both Sync and the nav system are going out from Ford free of charge. And i remain content that I took the plunge and got Sync. Could Apple have done better? Probably. But, it's a moot point.

    So, basically

"Ford slid from 5th place in 2011 to the 10th spot this year because of "the subpar reliability of some new vehicles, due largely to the troublesome MyFord Touch infotainment system and Power-Shift automatic transmission," said Consumer Reports."

Microsoft is partly to blame for Ford slipping so much this year. Nice going, Redmond! Crappy American technology being integrated into a crappy American car!

    Sync 1.0

I have Sync 1.0 ('09 Escape) and don't have many problems with it. But it doesn't really have many features either - just bluetooth calling, some basic voice recognition, and MP3 audio (either USB or BT A2DP). The only issue I've noticed is punctuation marks in titles of songs or band names aren't properly indexed by Sync.
