Russian customs reclassify iPad as computer, nix import tax

Conflicts with Apple's own view of device

The Russian Federal Custom Service has chosen to reclassify the iPad as a computer, in theory conferring cheaper prices, reports say. The tablet was previously considered a navigation device, since 3G models include GPS functions. Wi-Fi models don't, although whether the FCS has considered that distinction is unknown.

Because of the reclassification, the iPad will no longer be subject to a 5 percent import tax. That could potentially lower the cost for some buyers; whether or not regular store prices will drop remains to be seen. The FCS says, meanwhile, that "other" tablets with GPS will continue to be subject to the import tax.

Apple itself has typically refused to call the iPad a computer, instead preferring the term "post-PC" device. It lacks many PC features, such as external storage, a user-accessible filesystem, and the ability to run apps from any source. Apple has on the other hand tried to address some concerns, for instance eliminating the need to sync with a PC for functions like updates, backup, or printing.
