Main LulzSec members arrested in Europe, US

Three top-rung members of hacking group LulzSec have been arrested by the FBI on Tuesday morning, Fox News reported. Two others were charged with conspiracy, all thanks to the cooperation of the organization's leader, 29-year-old Xavier Monsegur, otherwise known as Sabu (pictured). He pleaded guilty on August 15 of last year to 12 counts related to hacking, fraud, and identity theft and has worked with the government since, sources told the outlet.

The five suspects include Ryan Ackroyd (Kayla), spokesman Jake Davis (Topiary), Darren Martyn (pwnsauce), Donncha O'Cearrbhail (palladium), and Jeremy Hammond (Anarchaos). Ackroyd and Davis are from London, England, Martyn and O'Cearrbhail from Ireland, and Hammond resides in Chicago. The case against them is being held in a court in the Southern District of New York.

Hammond is charged with attacking US security company Stratfor in December, and he may be charged separately for this. He is also believed to be a member of Anonymous, although the group has an informal membership structure where nearly anyone can claim responsibility.

LulzSec is an offshoot of larger hacker group Anonymous. Monsegur, a 28-year-old unemployed father of two, was reportedly found out by the FBI in June of 2011, and became a cooperating witness.

While not publicized, the arrests were corroborated by police sources talking to Reuters.
