Samsung patents device with flexible display

Bending/folding displays could hit future devices

Samsung has applied for several patents with the USPTO involving flexible display technology. Using the technology, the company could possible create new designs for smartphones, wearable displays or large-size pull out screens. As often the case with patent applications, there is no certainty as to whether this specific technology will end up in any actual product.

At the core of the flexible display is a plastic rather than glass substrate. The characteristics and thickness of the material give it strength, yet flexibility, enabling it to be bent or even folded, and yet maintain the ability to display an image. Another feature of the material is its ability to be used as a power switch. If the display is flat, it draws current. If it's rolled or folded, then it draws less current. This could eliminate several electronic switches which add to the cost of a device.

Last month, the company confirmed that it would start production of flexible screens which could see their way into production some time during 2013. It is unclear if these patents cover the technology that will be used in these products. [via Patent Bolt]
