HTC unlocks bootloader for aging Dream handset

Company returns to "oldie but goodie"

HTC has finally released a bootloader unlock utility for its aging Dream handset, which was also known as the T-Mobile G1 when it arrived on the market more than three years ago as the first Android-powered smartphone.

"Another oldie but goodie," HTC quipped in a Twitter post. "Unlock bootloader support for the HTC Dream is now here! Check it."

Amateur developers early last year attempted to port Honeycomb builds to the handset, however the unofficial upgrade was unstable and problematic. Official updates ceased to arrive after Android 2.1 Eclair.

HTC late last year promised to include all of its Android devices launched after September 2011 in the bootloader unlocking program. The list has continued to expand and open new devices to tinkering, with the recent addition of the Droid Incredible 2 and Thunderbolt, however the company cautions that the process voids warranties and still faces carrier restrictions in some cases.
