iOS 5.1 due later today; iPad 2 drops in price to $399

Upgraded tablet simply 'the new iPad'

As a part of its third-generation iPad event, Apple announced that iOS 5.1 will be released later today. Few features have been revealed, but the focus is on a Japanese version of Siri for the iPhone 4S. Previously Siri was restricted to English-, French-, and German-speaking users.

Apple is now also keeping a previous-generation iPad in production for the first time. The iPad 2 has been discounted by $100, making a 16GB Wi-Fi model just $399. In the past people wanting older, cheaper hardware had to wait for refurbished models to become available. Another unusual change is that the top-end hardware is simply being called "the new iPad;" Apple normally uses a clear designation for flagship products.

    Really

the only misstep today was not calling the new iPad the "iPad HD." That's it.

I don't believe in an afterlife or a "spirit," but if I'm wrong, I'm sure Steve was proud of the job the team did today.
