Windows Mobile Marketplace to shut down on May 9

The Windows Mobile 6 Marketplace will close on May 9, Microsoft is informing users with a letter, embedded below. The move shouldn't come as a surprise, as developers were no longer able to post new apps since July 15. For all intents and purposes, Windows Phone has replaced Windows Mobile as Microsoft's only mobile OS, despite promises at first to keep Windows Mobile as an adjunct.

As of last June, Windows Mobile users also weren't able to download apps from the Marketplace website, though they could still access them from their phones and PDAs. In the letter, Microsoft is urging any existing Windows Mobile users to get all their current apps and system software updated before the store is shut off entirely.

Users can still turn to unofficial stores apps for the aging mobile OS. [via TechCrunch]
