Mozilla starts porting Firefox to Windows 8's Metro UI

Last month, Mozilla announced that it would be developing a version of its browser software that had the look and feel of Microsoft's Windows 8 Metro user interface. This week, the browser's developers provided a status update. Work has begun on the project, and some details of the institution's efforts have emerged.

The main language behind the code will be the Windows Runtime C++ Template Library (WRL). The GUI will be made mostly by painting to DirectX with some limited use of XAML.

The developers also have indicated that, because of Microsoft's requirements, the browser will only be able to use the Metro-like UI if it's set as a system's default browser. They are also uncertain, because it's a Metro style browser and not an actual Metro app, if it will be available as a download through the Windows Store.
