LG, Sharp allegedly failed quality tests
Samsung is currently the only display supplier for the third-generation iPad, claims Vinita Jakhanwal, a senior manager with research firm IHS iSuppli. Two other companies in the running, Sharp and LG Display, allegedly failed to meet Apple's quality requirements. "The display specifications on the new iPad are very demanding in terms of the very high resolution," says Jakhanwal. "Achieving this high resolution without compromising on the power consumption and brightness and maintaining Apple’s quality standards are supposedly proving to be a challenge for LG Display and Sharp."
The 2048x1536 display on the new iPad is unique in the tablet world. Jakhanwal suggests, though, that Sharp and LG could join iPad panel shipments in April. Apple may be eager to reduce its dependence on Samsung, since the two companies are engaged in numerous legal complaints over the hardware and software used in touchscreen devices.
