New iPad launches in Asia, Europe thrive as Woz waits in LA

New iPad has success abroad

Apple's new iPad has gone on sale in Asia and Europe with early signs of success. In Australia and Japan, reports existed of hundreds of people in line at Apple stores, including as many as 450 at the flagship store in Tokyo's Ginza district, the Nikkei said. It also launched in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Early anecdotes from the Hong Kong launch through the Wall Street Journal suggested that Apple's lottery system for purchasing had been successful. Rather than allow large queues of those who hadn't pre-ordered, Apple had buyers get into a lottery system that would have them come at varying points of the day. It made for a less dramatic opening but also minimized scalping and violence from earlier device launches.

In the UK, Pocket-lint noticed a similar effect to the Japanese launch at London-area stores.

North America is on the edge of iPad launches and is seeing its customary queues, including hundreds at Apple's New York City locations. Reports from Canada are similar; the Ottawa Apple Store had over 100 in line with less than an hour to go.

On the West coast, Steve Wozniak has made his near-traditional line-up for a new Apple product, declining to take advantage of his status to get a device early and chatting with What's Trending. Although he regularly uses Android, he still has enthusiasm for Apple's technology, including in the post-Jobs era.

"There are still great products coming out," he said. "Steve [Jobs] was really responsible for setting up a company, a culture, a method of developing products that continue to create great products. If I ever see them not great, then I'll be screaming."
