HTC and Sprint hint at Android device plans

Sprint and HTC on Tuesday jointly sent invitations to Electronista and others for their "latest collaboration" on April 4. The New York City invitation was sparse on details beyond having Sprint CEO Dan Hesse and HTC president Jason MacKenzie, using a pin in the graphic as a possible clue. While it might be a hint as to a pen-based tablet, it may also just be a reference to Sprint's classic "needle drop" TV ads.

One possibility is the Quattro, a quad-core Tegra 3 tablet that has long been rumored but hasn't surfaced in the past few months. Sprint was the first carrier to have given modern HTC tablets a home in the US and launched the Evo View 4G roughly a year ago. HTC has been insistent on pen input as a stand-out feature and would include Beats Audio.

Alternately, the phone may be the Jet. If so, it would be a CDMA variant on the One X. Like the AT&T version, it would drop from a Tegra 3 to a dual-core Snapdragon S4 in return for getting 4G LTE support. A different name could point to a new look and possibly special features beyond what AT&T and others might have.

The event would be HTC's first special gathering outside of a trade show and would show a further attempt to reclaim the US. It's continuing to struggle in smartphones as a combination of Apple and Samsung pressure has mostly muted its growth. For Sprint, it would be the first special event of the kind since getting the iPhone and would show continued loyalty to HTC despite it now being second in Sprint's phone sales to Apple.

    Unless it's an iPad 4

It won't be above the fold on anything.
