New iPad online sales cool slightly
The online Apple Store has shown signs of Apple more quickly getting a grip on new iPad sales. Shipping lead times in the US that had extended to 2-3 weeks within a few days of the announcement are now back down to a quoted 1-2 weeks. The interval is the same regardless of capacity or the presence of 4G.
The shrink back follows considerably quicker than for the iPad 2, which took a month to get back to that state. Some of the faster recovery might come from taking online pre-orders that weren't an option during the iPad 2's release a year earlier.
Apple's demand is still much higher than a year earlier, with three million sold in three days. Shortening times would thus be more likely to represent Apple having a better ability to forecast demand and match it than in previous years. Last year, Apple took over four months to get to same-day shipping for the iPad 2 and might have lost some sales through online delays and retail shortages.
