Lovefilm streaming service overtakes DVD by mail

UK-based streaming service provider Lovefilm has just revealed that its streaming service has surpassed its combined mail rentals of DVD, Blu-ray, and games. The company operates throughout Europe and is the biggest, with more than two million members. In a 12-month period, streaming users grew four-fold, while rental-by-mail users increased by only 25 percent in the same period.

Lovefilm, which is owned by Amazon, further said that it uses 20 percent more streamed videos than rented ones. The company was started in 2009 in its current iteration, though it offered download-to-own services in 2006.

It offers both streaming and by-mail services for the same monthly price. Late last year, it began offering Lovefilm Instant, a stand-alone streaming service that can be accessed from PCs, game consoles, Internet-aware HDTVs, and tablets.
