MacMall to open first retail store outside of California

updated 12:45 pm EDT, Mon March 26, 2012

Third-party retailer makes rare expansion

A third-party Apple retailer, MacMall, is planning to expand outside of southern California for the first time, notes AppleInsider. The company currently has three stores in southern California, but is planning to open a shop at 329 West Grand Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on March 31st. To promote the effort the first 500 people to visit after the 9AM opening will be entered into a 10AM drawing for products like a MacBook Air; other drawings will take place throughout the day, and between today and March 30th, although the pre-opening raffles are being aimed at business customers.

MacMall says it is pursuing or considering more locations to be based in Chicago, southern California, and/or New York City. Such an expansion is rare for a third-party Apple reseller; as Apple has grown its retail presence, some vendors have found it difficult to compete. In Europe sanctioned "Premium" resellers have complained that Apple is using unfair tactics that give third parties a disadvantage.

    Back in the day...

I remember meticulously studying the MacMall and MacWarehouse catalogs every time we got one in the mail (I swear like twice a week) or when we ordered something new. I personally haven't used them in probably over 15 years, which is kind of sad. They must be doing well to open additional stores outside of California so I hope they stay in business for years to come.

    Alright

Now people in Chicago can be ripped off and mistreated in person instead of having to do it over the internet!

It's not like the Apple Stores

sell everything one might ever want for their Apple computers. There are plenty of products not on the shelves or in the various official Apple sales channels.

    High tax cities

Current sales tax in Chicago is 9.5% (was 10.25% not long ago). NYC is 8.875%. I'd probably only purchase small impulse items since I could save $100.00 or more just in taxes on a new Mac by purchasing at Amazon and waiting a couple days.
