Harry Potter series goes to e-books in iPad-friendly form

First Harry Potter e-books come in ePub form

JK Rowling's own Pottermore store became the first to carry Harry Potter e-books on Tuesday. The shop has all seven novels in ePub format. The files are unprotected and will work with iPads and other iOS devices along with Android hardware and anything else that takes standard ePub files; Kindle users get their own file format for support.

The titles are currently available in the US and the UK. Prices vary in the series, with the earliest three books costing $8 each while the last four cost $10 per copy. Those who want to get the entire series at once can pay an unusual $57.54, or several dollars less than buying each title individually.

Audiobooks were already available elsewhere, but are also on the store for either $30 each among the first three, $45 each for the last four, and $243 for the entire set.

The Harry Potter book series has been one of the few to stay out of the e-book realm. Rowling hasn't explicitly explained it, although having control over pricing and getting revenue directly may play a part. Existing stores like the iBookstore or Kindle Store often fight to get exclusives and have conditions, such as a no-lower-price and 30 percent royalty cuts, that would minimize Rowling's return.

    No DRM

It's great that Rowlings isn't going with DRM, given all the trouble that causes readers who'll want to move their copies from reader to reader over the years. She was probably being realistic too, something rare in the world of major publishers. I've heard that scanned etexts of her books came out without hours of each book's release anyway. It's better to fight the pirates with clean texts and added features.

Of course they released it DRM free. Everyone already has a copy of it.
