EU to decide on Google antitrust charges after April 8

European Commission pushes back Google date

The European Commissioner's competition head Joaquin Alumnia on Wednesday postponed a decision on possible antitrust charges versus Google. He pushed back from a promise of late March or early April until after April 8, or after Easter. Investigators had asked for "some more days, even weeks" to accommodate the holidays while still conducting a proper investigation.

"We want to advance in our investigation but we want to advance on a solid basis, not because of a letter or some pressures," Alumnia said.

The EU started investigating in late fall 2010 over concerns that Google was abusing its majority market share for search. The complaints, partly spurred on by Microsoft, have accused Google of unfairly prioritizing its own services over others. Other issues leveled in Europe have included making it difficult to get information out to switch advertisers, the amount of resources given to Microsoft to make a YouTube app for Windows Phone, and possible undue influences on search choice with Android.

Google has always defended its moves as legal, since customers only had to go to another search engine like Bing. Many companies depend on good Google results placement, however, and many have an investment in services like Gmail or YouTube that reduces the incentive to switch to Bing or a similar site just to search.
