RIM said purging execs ahead of results

RIM shows signs of trouble in VP shakeup

New leaks have hinted at sweeping efforts by RIM to cure trouble inside the company. Tips to the Globe and Mail had numerous vice presidents and senior vice presidents being laid off on Thursday. Much of the focus was on marketing and sales staff, according to the unnamed person.

"Lots of high level people within RIM were let go today," the contact said.

New CEO Thorsten Heins has promised a shift in focus more towards the regular public than in the past, which might have prompted the change. He also mentioned hoping to shore up sales of BlackBerry 7 phones during the wait for BlackBerry 10 through renewed marketing, although this wasn't necessarily a cue for imminent job cuts.

Any executive layoffs may be a sign that results, due minutes after the leak, were poorer than thought. RIM had already been expecting modest numbers of between 11 million to 12 million BlackBerry phones shipped. The success of the iPhone 4S launch and overall shrinking market share due to both the iPhone and Android has led some to expect that RIM will go below expectations as it did for much of 2011.

RIM hadn't commented, but share trading had reportedly been halted after hours.

    Smells like...

Smells like RIM could be positioning themselves for sale. First you get rid of the staff that got you into trouble in the first place. Then you cut your costs to make your company more attractive to prospective buyers. Then you shop the company around.

But who would buy RIM at this point? Microsoft? Nope, too late. They've already made Nokia their hardware b****. It looks like RIM will end up being almost like another Palm. But without the acquisition.
