Paramount strikes google deal for movies

Google confirmed a deal with Paramount Pictures on Wednesday that would significantly expand its movie roster. "Nearly" 500 movies are coming both to Google Play Movies and YouTube as rentals in the US and Canada. Some are available immediately, while others are being rolled out over the next few months.

The pact helps Google catch up to Apple and other established movie providers. With five of six major studios, it has almost 9,000 movies and enough to provide a more complete catalog on the web and for Android. Most of its focus is now on getting deeper access to the catalog and to go to a wider mix of countries.

Google Play's most conspicuous gap is a lack of purchasing. Leaks have pointed to it possibly being forced to offer full sales in order to secure movie rights that it would otherwise have been denied. It's unknown whether the Paramount deal is directly linked to that pressure.
