Dropbox clamps down on users gaming HTC promo

Plans to retake snatched storage

Later this month, Dropbox plans on launching a promotion giving HTC phone owners with devices that include the HTC Sense 4.0 app 23GB of online storage free for two years. Some industrious individuals found a work around that would let anybody, whether or not they owned such a phone, to leverage the deal. Dropbox has now issued an advisory that it is on to the scheme, and anybody who signed up for the storage in this manner will soon find themselves without it.

The scheme was originally posted at XDA-Developers' forums on March 17. It provided a link and instructions how to download and install the new APK app with access to the enlarged storage capacity on almost any smartphone.

Dropbox Support has now blogged that the promotion has not officially started, and won't until devices such as the HTC One X, One S, and One V start shipping in the US. "The method to earn 23GB that is being circulated... on blogs and forums is illegitimate," Dropbox has stated. "We plan to remove any space received using this method."
