41-megapixel camera phone to run Symbian OS

Nokia has put up its 808 PureView smartphone up for pre-order on its Italian website. The phone is most notable for its 41-megapixel camera and that it still runs the Nokia Belle (Symbian) OS instead of Windows Phone. Nokia is expected to begin shipping the phone SIM free (unlocked), priced at 599 ($785 USD) in May.

The 808 PureView incorporates a four-inch ClearBlack AMOLED 360x640 screen with Gorilla Glass protection. The processor is a 1.3GHz but single-core ARM11 chip. In addition to sporting a resolution higher than most DSLRs on the market today, the camera incorporates a Carl Zeiss lens and a reportedly lossless 4X zoom. Video recording is 1080p at 30FPS. Audio is also a key point, with a unique engine that prevents loud sounds from overwhelming the input and making it possible to record some concerts or other events without harsh noise.

Although the technology is initially available only running Symbian, Nokia has posted job openings on LinkedIn indicating that it has plans for a Windows Phone version as well. [via GSMArena]
