LG developing new smartphone response in D1L

Korean newspaper DDaily is reporting that LG was not completely happy with the reception to its smartphone launches at Mobile World Congress. Not wanting to sit idly while watching Samsung and HTC getting a jump on it with the introduction of their next-generation halo phones, LG is said to be prepping a 4.7-inch, 720p smartphone known internally as the D1L. As with AT&T's HTC One X, the device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked a 1.5GHz.

When the D1L ships, it is expected to be running Android 4.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The HTC One X is one of the first of the new 2012-era smartphones to ship with ICS out of the box, while it can be assumed that the Samsung Galaxy S III will also ship with ICS on board. Where the Samsung smartphone will differentiate itself from a processing perspective will be its in-house Exynos SoC. It is expected to be a quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz. However, that is no guarantee that it will out perform the Snapdragon S4, which has surprised in benchmark tests against NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 processor.

The DDaily's source said that the LG D1L will be out in May, which is also around the time that the Samsung Galaxy S III is expected to bow. In the meantime, LG still has more immediate launches of Android 4.0 smartphones in the pipeline. The Tegra 3-powered Optimus 4X HD and the Optimus L-Style L5 and L7 launched at Mobile World Congress are all due to ship soon. [via The Verge]
