Coating likened to ceramic

HTC has promised an "immediate fix" for a number of One S handsets that have reportedly suffered damage to the unique coating material. Posts on XDA-Developers show several handsets bearing their aluminum base metal in certain areas, rather than the layer of "microarc oxidization."

When HTC initially introduced the One-series handsets at Mobile World Congress, the company promised that its coating technology, which was claimed to be "originally developed for use in satellites," transforms the aluminum surface into a ceramic crystalline structure that is four times harder than standard aluminum anodization.

"The finish on the One S was laboratory tested as being at a hardness similar to ceramic," the company said in a statement. "While that's hard, it doesn't mean it's impossible to damage."

Despite the disclaimer, the company claims it is working on a fix and is "implementing some small changes" to avoid future problems. Users are said to be able to return affected One S handsets to stores for a limited time to receive a replacement. [via The Verge]
