ChevronWP7 ramps down

The ChevronWP7 Windows Phone jailbreak team confirmed plans to ramp down on Friday. Following their exhausting the tokens they used to give jailbreaks with Microsoft's blessing, the group decided that not enough jailbreak app writers were transitioning towards official, published apps. The community itself was 'supercharged,' ChevronWP7 said, but few wrote apps with a mind to sharing them with others.

"Our data indicates that most developers simply unlocked their devices for non-developmental reasons and never went all the way to publish an app in the marketplace," the group said.

Some had also misinterpreted the jailbreak as an unlock feature for GSM-based phones or offering full root access to the phone. As designed, it's only meant to allow running apps on regular Windows Phone devices without having to download them from the Windows Phone Marketplace and follow its rules.

The decision to end the deal was a mutual one with Microsoft, the ChevronWP7 team said. In return, Microsoft would give a one-year membership to the Windows Phone App Hub to those who had received a jailbreak token in the past.

While ending on friendly terms, the lack of a clear jailbreak option could lead to a return to unsanctioned hacks on Windows Phone. It could have a small impact on development by discouraging those wanting to experiment, whether as a side project or as preface to publishing a full app.
