Apple tells videographer FCPX 2012 plans

Pro videographer Larry Jordan published a preview on Sunday of Final Cut Pro X updates that Apple had promised him would come later in 2012. The current editing app should soon get RED camera support, letting it handle Redcode-capable 4K and 5K cameras like the Scarlet-X without transcoding first. Multichannel audio editing will be added to the pro video tool as well, although how this would work wasn't explained.

More additions would start off with Dual Viewers, a feature that would be equivalent to having separate Record and Source models in a traditional setup; Apple hoped improve on how others had handled it in the past, Jordan understood. Along with RED cameras, FCPX would simultaneously recognize the MXF format of Sony's XDCAM line natively, again dropping the need to transcode first and risk losing image quality.

In providing the preview, Apple stressed that it was fully supporting FCPX and wanted videographers to consider it a pro app. It also hinted that there might be another companion app beyond Compressor or Motion, although Jordan couldn't glean more information.

Following stiff early criticism, Apple has been aggressively rolling features into FCPX, some of which were features that had been in FCP7 but had been taken out with the complete remake. Among these had been multi-camera support that many movie and TV producers consider vital. Adobe has been hoping to capitalize on Apple's pro video reboot and just previewed Premiere Pro CS6 to add features such as greater-than-HD video support.
