Airline CFO to be Apple VP of sales

Apple confirmed late Monday to AllThingsD that it had obtained a key executive from United Continental. The airline's CFO, Zane Rowe, had left to become a sales VP at Apple. Company representative Steve Dowling was short on details, but pointed to what it saw as a good track record with Rowe.

"He built a great team at United and we think he is going to do a fantastic job at Apple," Dowling said.

The shift is unusual for a CFO, which some would consider a demotion given that Rowe's prior position is widely considered a professional peak. Apple's sheer size and growth, even after a sharp decline in its stock price over the past few days, may give Rowe more room for potential than in the often struggling airline industry.

Apple has more recently been leaning towards hiring outside executives, including former Dixons VP John Browett as its Senior VP of retail.
