RED Dragon and REDray Projector tipped at NAB
RED's Jim Jannard and Jarred Land gave two previews of two high-end technology upgrades. The Dragon will upgrade both the EPIC and Scarlet lines to a maximum 6K resolution. In the process, they also get 120FPS shooting even at 5K, and over 15 stops of dynamic range for better handling of highlights and shadows.
The REDray Projector will serve as a companion to play much of RED's own footage. A laser-besed design should display both 4K video (presumably in 2D) as well as passive glasses 3D at up to 120 frames per second. No calibration is needed for the projector, RED said, even as it reaches up to a 15-foot display.
Both only have general 2012 release schedules, although the Dragon upgrade should cost $6,000 for EPIC series cameras and the REDray will cost under $10,000. A price for the Scarlet's Dragon upgrade hasn't been set.
Historically, RED has been prone to delaying releases, but it has improved its ability to deliver in recent months. The REDray should be on show in beta form at NAB.
