TI to offer DSP implementation of JPEG 2000

updated 09:40 pm EDT, Tue April 17, 2012

Allows real time 2k and 4k video processing

Earlier today, Texas Instruments announced the industry's first multicore digital signal processor (DSP) implementation of the JPEG-2000 video codec. Four TI 6678 digital signal processors (DSPs) will soon be available on a half-length PCI Express x2 (PCIe) card tailored for use in data-intensive digital video broadcast and other video implementations, such as surveillance and the medical industry.

Using 54 watts of power, the PCIe card supports 2k (2048x1536) and 4k (4096x3072) real-time video resolution encoding and decoding. Given the software-only nature of the DSP and the upcoming free release of the JPEG-2000 codec, end users can rapidly adapt the platform and develop applications quickly to suit their own needs. Other developer costs have been reduced by 50 percent, further lowering barriers to entry.

The C6678 chip isn't limited to JPEG-2000. Support is currently available for H.254, H.263, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, JPEG, VC-1, and Sorenson Spark codecs. Future support is planned for AVC Intra and the still-under-development H.265. TI's JPEG 2000 codec will be available for free download in June 2012. Advantech's DSPC-8681E PCIe card has no announced release date.
